Dubbo is a wonderful country city of the Central West Region of New South Wales, being located at the intersections of the Mitchell, Newell and Golden highways, it is at the crossroads of the north-south and east west transport routes. Dubbo is a 5 hour drive from Sydney and is very well serviced by train (CountryLink) and air with REX and Qantas should you wish to fly.

Dubbo sits in the fertile Macquarie Valley, where the Newell, Mitchell and Golden highways meet, five hours' drive from Sydney, it is a destination that combines a rich pastoral history with great food and wine, expansive parklands, museums, galleries, arts and crafts, and the famous Taronga Western Plains Zoo, making this part of Country NSW ideal for a family holiday.

Learn about Australia's pioneering history on a heritage walk or at a historic homestead, Victorian-era gaol or modern cultural centre. Old Dubbo Gaol is now a museum and a chilling reminder of Victorian-era prison life. The town has several other galleries, museums and collections, as well as some outstanding natural attractions, including the Dubbo Regional Botanic Gardens.

Enjoy local produce, including the red and white wines of this emerging wine region. Surrounding villages, including Brocklehurst, Ballimore, Wongarbon, Elong Elong, Toongi and Eumungerie, are also worth a look. There are many different routes that can be taken when driving from any of the capital cities to Dubbo. The following is an overview of the routes from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide that may help you in planning your outback experience.

From Brisbane:

Warrego Hwy <> Newell Highway: Distance = 850km approx

From Sydney:

Western Freeway <> Castlereagh Highway: Distance = 405km approx

From Melbourne:

Hume Highway <> Newell Highway: Distance = 832km aprox

From Adelaide: 

Sturt Highway <> Newell Highway: Distance = 1,163km approx

 

Outback NSW Road Alerts

This traffic region is bounded by Broken Hill and the South Australian border to the west to Mudgee and the Blue Mountains in the east. This region extends as far north as Tibooburra and the Queensland border and as far south as Cowra and Marsden. The region includes the towns of Dubbo, Parkes and Bourke.
